- Glass-to-glass latency — time from camera capture to viewer playback. Typical ranges:
- Standard HLS-based playback: 6–30 s (target 10–15 s).
- Low-latency modes (WebRTC / LL-HLS where available): 0.5–5 s.
- GOP / keyframe interval — keyframe every 2 s is the de-facto standard. That's a GOP length of 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- Part / segment sizes — for chunked/LL delivery use parts of 200–500 ms and segment targets of 1–4 s; traditional HLS uses 6 s segments but modern low-latency setups aim for 2 s segments with sub-second parts where supported.
- Bitrate targets — pick a bitrate that matches resolution, framerate and uplink capacity (see Practical configuration targets below for exact values).
- Buffer — player buffer should be sized to 1–3 segments for low-latency setups and 3–6 segments for reliability on standard HLS.

- Use OBS or a hardware encoder, push via RTMP directly to Twitch.
- Pros: minimal complexity, lowest cost. Cons: local CPU/bandwidth limits, difficult to re-stream without extra upload usage.
- Do you need to broadcast to Twitch and multiple social networks at once?

Latency budget / architecture budget

- Capture & ingest (camera → encoder → RTMP push)
- Target: 50–300 ms. Reduce by using hardware capture cards with NDIs avoided or using direct USB camera capture.
- Encode
- Software x264: 200–800 ms depending on preset. Use presets like veryfast/faster for 720p/1080p to keep encode time below 500 ms on a modern CPU.
- Hardware encoders (NVENC, QuickSync, AMF): 50–200 ms encode latency.
- Segmenting / packaging
- Traditional HLS: 2–6 s (segment duration) + 1 segment delay for safety.
- Low-latency: 200–500 ms part sizes and 1–2 part buffer gives 0.5–2 s packaging overhead.
- CDN / propagation
- Target: 100–500 ms regional, 500–1500 ms global depending on CDN and POP distance.
- Player buffer
- Low-latency target: 0.5–3 s. Standard target: 6–15 s depending on playback reliability needs.

- Standard Twitch-style stream — glass-to-glass 10–20 s: capture 200 ms, encode 500 ms, segment 6 s, CDN 500 ms, player buffer 3–5 s.

Video
- Keyframe interval: 2 s (set keyint or GOP to fps * 2).
- Profiles and levels: H.264 High profile, level 4.1 for 1080p30/720p60; use 4.2 only if your encoder and player require it.
- CBR vs VBR: use CBR for streaming to Twitch and social platforms. If constrained VBR is used, set max-bitrate = target bitrate and VBV buffer to 2 s.

- Wrong stream key or ingest URL
- Fix: Confirm the key in Twitch dashboard and paste it into OBS; verify you are using the correct ingest region (use the closest ingest server for lower latency).
- Upload bandwidth saturation
- Symptoms: dropped frames, high encoder queue, viewer buffering. Fix: run a speedtest; reduce bitrate by 15–30% or upgrade uplink; use a cloud multistream so only one stream uses your uplink.
- Encoder CPU overload
- Symptoms: skipped frames, high CPU. Fix: switch x264 preset to faster/veryfast, use NVENC/QuickSync, lower resolution/framerate, or offload mixing to a second machine.
- Incorrect keyframe interval
- Symptoms: playback stalls or platform rejects your stream. Fix: set keyframe interval to 2 s in OBS/encoder and confirm RTMP server accepts that setting.

- Can't connect to RTMP endpoint:
